Building and Sustaining Rapport
Are you a good rapport builder?
In any walk of life, having a good relationship – or rapport – with someone will mean that you and they will get more out of it, you’ll enjoy it more, it’s more productive and you’ll both feel that you can count on each other when the chips are down.
Some of the words that are spoken in relation to Rapport are:
- Trust
- Support
- Openness
- Frankness
- Comfortable
- Challenge
- Truth
- Respect
- Lead and Follow
These words are also often used to describe the sort of qualities a good leader and manager and colleague should have to inspire, lead, direct, manage, challenge and support their teams.
These are not virtues that people are born with. They can be learned, developed and used with tremendous positive effect in all interpersonal situations. Getting the best out of someone, at work, at home or anywhere can be most effective and enjoyable if a good rapport exists. Good rapport can result in:
- Employees pulling out all the stops for you
- People believing and trusting in your judgement and leadership
- Customers giving you the business because they feel good about you
- Colleagues going the extra mile for you
- People seeking you out for your input, opinions and advice
- Others wanting to work or be with you because they want to – not because they have to
